Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person, has died at the age of 116.
According to Yoshitsugu Nagata, an official in charge of elderly policies in Ashiya city, Itooka passed away on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan.
Born on May 23, 1908, Itooka became the oldest person last year following the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas. When informed of her achievement, she humbly replied, “Thank you.”
Itooka’s remarkable life was marked by her love for sports, particularly volleyball, which she played in high school. She also climbed Mount Ontake, a 3,067-meter peak, twice. During World War II, she managed the office of her husband’s textile factory.
Itooka is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren. A private funeral service was held with family and friends.
With Itooka’s passing, the world’s oldest person is now 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, born 16 days after Itooka.
